Hundreds of thousands may lose access to the internet by July as a result of hackers' advertising scam | Mail Online

Hundreds of thousands may lose access to the internet by July as a result of hackers' advertising scam | Mail Online: "Hundreds of thousands of people could lose access to the internet by July following a hackers' scam - and they don't even know it.

Unknown to most of them, their problem began when international hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of infected computers around the world.

In a highly unusual response, the FBI set up a safety net months ago using government computers to prevent Internet disruptions for those infected users. But that system is to be shut down."

BBC NEWS - Warning over medical implant attacks

BBC NEWS - Warning over medical implant attacks: "Many medical implants are vulnerable to attacks that could threaten their users' lives, according to studies.

Security researchers have developed attacks that locate and compromise implants used to manage conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

One attack identified a radio signal that, if re-broadcast, would have switched off a heart defibrillator."

Dynamoo's Blog

Dynamoo's Blog: Another fake HP scan spam email leading to malware. This one follows the new technique of putting a malicious HTML (HP_Scan.htm) file inside a ZIP file to reduce the risk of it being blocked, and then it has multiple payload sites to try to get a higher infection rate. Nasty.

Danger, Danger, Will Robinson!!

Your computer can be your worst enemy!

"Some of the most widely used apps on Facebook—the games, quizzes and sharing services that define the social-networking site and give it such appeal—are gathering volumes of personal information.

A Wall Street Journal examination of 100 of the most popular Facebook apps found that some seek the email addresses, current location and sexual preference, among other details, not only of app users but also of their Facebook friends. One Yahoo service powered by Facebook requests access to a person's religious and political leanings as a condition for using it. The popular Skype service for making online phone calls seeks the Facebook photos and birthdays of its users and their friends"

Time for Mac Users to Stop Being So Complacent???

Either update Java or turn it off!

Flashback trojan reportedly controls half a million Macs and counting: "Variations of the Flashback trojan have reportedly infected more than half a million Macs around the globe, according to Russian antivirus company Dr. Web. The company made an announcement on Wednesday—first in Russian and later in English—about the growing Mac botnet, first claiming 550,000 infected Macs. Later in the day, however, Dr. Web malware analyst Sorokin Ivan posted to Twitter that the count had gone up to 600,000, with 274 bots even checking in from Cupertino, CA, where Apple's headquarters are located."

“What Must Be Said” by Günter Grass

“What must be said” by Günter Grass

"Why did I say it only now,
old and with the last ink:
the nuclear power of Israel
threat the world peace?
Because it must be said
what tomorrow will be too late;
Because – as Germans and with
enough faults on the back -
we might also become deliverers of a predictable
crime, and no excuse would erase our complicity"

This is an excerpt of a poem by Gunter Grass that discusses Israel's intent to destroy Iran. Unsurprisingly, the Israelis have seriously denounced Mr. Grass.

Japanese 'Ghost Ship' to be scuttled by US Coast Guard

And here I was having daydreams of claiming this ship via Marine Salvage laws! I thought this might turn into a pretty cool floating home. Oh, well...

Japanese 'ghost ship' to be scuttled by US Coast Guard: "The ghostly shell of the Ryou-Un Maru was spotted off Canada last month and has been deemed a threat to the maritime industry as it heads for busy shipping lanes."

The ship is less than 200 miles from shore now and presents a real danger to other ships in the area - the Ghost Ship can't be seen at night because there are no lights on board. The Coast Guard will blow holes in the hull and let the Ryou-Un Maru slip to the bottom of the sea. :-(
